Other Tips and Tricks

I’ve told you some of my best well-kept secretes to getting a high end wedding on a budget, but I still have a few tips and tricks in store for saving money on your wedding without skimping on quality.

If you’re handy or crafty do some of the wedding decorating yourself, but be sure to check out my future blog post (What you should and shouldn’t DIY at your wedding) to make sure you’re still making good use of your time and money. If you’ve got a little bit of extra time while you’re wedding planning putting together a few of your own decorations such as arranging centerpieces can save you money rather than paying someone else to do it.

If you have a talent, skill, or something else that could be desirable to a vendor ask for a swap or trade. Are you an accountant? Offer to file taxes for some of the businesses you’re working for? Painter? See if they need a couple rooms in their house painted? Marketer? Offer to create some free campaigns for them to advertise with. If you have skills see if there is a way you can figure out a trade for each other’s skills. This also requires a little more work, but could save you money in the long haul. Keep in mind that some vendors will not be willing to offer trades and prefer to be paid for their services, but it never hurts to ask.

See if you can do payments. This one doesn’t necessarily save you money, but a lot of your vendors are willing to let you make payments on their services if you talk to them about it up front and as long as everything is paid before the wedding. Paying a little over a longer period of time can also put a lot less strain on your personal finances than paying in one big chunk and can save you from putting everything on credit. With some good planning you can even start paying or saving for your wedding several months to years early so that when the time comes it’s a lot less stressful.

Last, but not least, just skip the unnecessary items a lot of people include on their wedding day. The most important thing about your wedding day is celebrating the union with the one you love. Skip the things that don’t matter to you because chances are they won’t matter to your guests either. Having your names printed on napkins or having custom candles hand mixed for each of your guests, while they may be cool, are not necessary and you can save a lot of money by skipping out on things that don’t make an impact. Those candles are going to end up in the back of someone’s cupboard and the napkins will be in the garbage. Spend your money on things that will make good memories for you and your honey and things that will last to help you remember your special day. Don’t overthink it, have fun, and do what makes you happy!
